October 21st 1861 would mark the first battle fought in Loudoun County during the American Civil War at the steep slopes of Balls Bluff, just a few miles North of Leesburg. What would follow were three years of destruction as Union and Confederate forces fought and skirmished in the county. The Battle of Balls Bluff was riddled with mistakes in Union command, and would have terrible consequences. Learn what went wrong in a private hike led by Balls Bluff Historian and VPHA Board Director Patrick Mountain.
The hike will be guided with stops to highlight different stories of the battle. The total distance is approximately 4 miles of rolling terrain. Please wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring plenty of water.
Water and snacks will be available.
